In 2017, a heartbreaking 4.1 million children were living in poverty in the UK. That’s a third of all children. This isn’t just a statistic. It impacts their life drastically, missing out on holidays, often going hungry and generally scoring lower on their GCSE’s.
Along with other radio stations across the country, Radio Aire take part in Mission Christmas, working hard to ensure no child wakes up without a gift on Christmas morning. This year, UWM is working with Radio Aire to collect gifts and raise money to help those living in poverty this Christmas.
Mission Christmas
Set up by charity Cash for Kids, Mission Christmas works with local radio stations, supermarkets and shops around the country to raise money and collect enough gifts to provide at least one present for each child living in poverty. For many children, this is the only gift they will receive on Christmas morning. The charity is not only focused on giving gifts at Christmas, but instilling hope in young people and showing those in need that they are cared for.
Getting involved
If you want to get involved in Mission Christmas this year, it couldn’t be easier. We are looking for unwrapped gifts for children up to the age of 18. It’s important not to forget about older children, who often get overlooked and may miss out.
If you’re able to, please buy an extra present this year, perhaps pick one up on a 3 for 2 deal and donate the free gift.
Then, just take the unwrapped present to your local drop off point, which you can find online. Mission Christmas will make sure it reaches a child in need in time for the big day.
There are a number of ways you can get involved on top of buying gifts, too. Whether you establish your local business as a drop off point, collect gifts in the workplace or get your school involved in raising money, everything can make a difference.
Here at UWM, we are collecting gifts from our team, friends and family, and our generous clients. Pop into our office to drop off any gifts or other donations.
Don’t worry if you’ve not got the time to buy gifts and take them to drop off points. You can still help by donating £5 to the cause. Simply text AIRE to 70808 to contribute £5 or go online to donate.
