We can hardly believe it, but Christmas 2015 is almost upon us. It has certainly been a busy year for the team here at UWM, and we’re looking forward to seeing what new challenges and adventures 2016 will bring. Unfortunately, not everyone will be feeling as hopeful and optimistic as us this Christmas. We’d like to change that.
At UWM, we’re committed to helping those less fortunate then ourselves. That’s why we have been long-term supporters of the Buy1GIVE1 initiative, a global social enterprise dedicated to funding life-saving and life-enriching projects.
We’re so proud to be able to say that this year our partnership with B1G1 has helped more than 120,000 people worldwide. And we’re not stopping there. We have big plans for 2016 too. Each Christmas, the UWM team selects a B1G1 project to support over the coming year. Here’s a list of each team member’s chosen project for 2016:
SHARON: LEND A LIBRARY BOOK.
I would like to support the Lend a Book Project as reading is one of pleasures in life and I would like to pass it on.
LAUREN: GIVE IMPROVED SANITATION FOR A CHILD.
I have been to Leeds Festival and I really appreciate my toilet
PAUL: GIVE REPRODUCTIVE AND CHILD HEALTH AWARENESS FOR WOMEN.
To slow down an ever increasing population.
GEORGINA: PROVIDE HYGIENE KIT FOR GIRLS.
They are using rags when they have a period. This is shocking to me that they have to be embarrassed and have to stay at home and off school when they are having period.
LIZ: GIVE ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER FOR A PERSON FOR A YEAR.
On my charity trip to Kenya I saw how essential clean water was to people’s health.
JONATHAN: GIVE TEACHING MATERIALS TO ETHIOPIAN NURSERY SCHOOL.
Education is really important and made even harder without the basic tools such as pens, pencils and paper.”
LEWIS: GIVE ACCESS TO LIFE-SAVING WATER IN ETHIOPIA.
Just under half the population has access to improved water supply, and only 21% of the population has adequate sanitation services. So I think it’s essential they receive support.
ALEX: GIVE 25 BOXES OF CHALKS
Really simple, but great idea. This can help children express creativity and like any writing tool, it is a key instrument in educating children how to read and write.
That’s a total of 8,500 lives impacted by the team’s giving choices!
This year we are also supporting Radio Aire’s Mission Christmas toy appeal which donates gifts to disadvantaged children in Leeds. This appeal makes such a huge difference to the lives of local children, so we are honoured to be able to help.
